Why Use Corrective Exercise?

There are mainly two ways in which we develop dysfunctional movement patterns:

1️⃣We don’t move enough
2️⃣We move poorly too much

Corrective exercise can be used to remedy our movement dysfunction. Especially when we start to focus on quality over quantity. We can begin to address any part of the physical system that’s not functioning optimally or normally.

Do you know what happens when we add load to dysfunction? Well, you don’t magically become more functional. It makes the compensation patterns worse. As trainers, it’s our responsibility to understand not to load compensatory movement.

Once we optimize and normalize our movement, we can start to load these patterns and improve our performance.

If we all moved better and were taught excellent exercise technique from the start, it would prevent the need for as much corrective exercises. But the reality is that most of us weren’t taught how to move well. We start sitting for a lifetime at age seven. We get injured. And our bodies learn to compensate. So chances are we can all afford to utilize these kind of drills to become fully functional.

Whether you don’t move enough or you move a lot with compensation, corrective exercises can be part of the solution to ensure functional movement and pain-free living.
