A Break From Heavy Lifting

You’ve been going to the gym for years. Your routine was set. Quick cardio warm-up. A few lighter sets and then you hit the weights hard. You went through the same workouts over and over of pushing barbells, pulling dumbbells and maybe using some of the machines.

There was one goal: Lift as much weight as possible.

Does this sound familiar?

With access to all those big weights, it was hard to consider any focus on improving the functionality of your movement. Pushing through pain was just part of the process.

But, what about motor control? Functional movement, flexibility, range of motion and keeping your joints healthy have all probably taken a back seat.

One big silver lining right now is the need to reprogram training. We can use training to focus entirely on our own body and listen to what it needs.

This is the time to bring attention to quality of movement.

We can do the body weight and corrective exercises that make our joints stable. We can do the things we’ve been neglecting. The things we need most.

We can change our goals in the short term while keeping the big picture in mind. Use this time to work on your quality of movement while giving the joints and central nervous system a re-set. It’s probably exactly what you need. See if you can bring that functional intention back to the gym and maintain that quality of movement.

Let’s think of this time as injury prevention. If you’ve been lifting hard for years, chances are that your connective tissues need a break. It’s nice to have impressive muscles, but it’s also nice to be able to scratch our own backs when we have an itch 😉.

Always remember, motion is lotion. We encourage you to Move Well, Live Well™.
