Meditation Myths

When we tell our personal training clients that we meditate everyday, it often gets followed up with many questions. We’ve started to notice that there is still a big misconception about what mediation is and what it’s not.

Here are some common myths:

❌ You try to make your mind blank.
Your mind might actually be quite busy when you meditate. The point it to notice your thoughts and then let them go without judgement.

❌ You have to sit in a lotus position.
You can meditate in any position. Seated, kneeling, standing, walking, laying on the couch. It’s all good. We prefer a supine 90/90 or prone crocodile positions to maintain the best postural alignment.

❌ Meditation is religious
You may find yourself becoming more spiritual in the process but it doesn’t have to be religious unless you want it to be.

❌ Only weird people meditate.
Yeah we may be weird and we meditate. But many non-weird people have been embracing meditation from the elite military to professional athletes.

Any time you take an intentional breath is a meditation. So you may meditate all the time without even realizing it.

Our tips to get started:

🔹Carve out time and commit.
5 minutes first thing in the morning is a great place to start.

🔹Don’t take days off.
Treat it like showering or brushing your teeth. Consider it part of your daily hygiene. Consistency is key.

🔹Be kind to yourself.
Meditation is hard. Especially at the beginning when you’re not used to slowing down. Be patient with the process. It might suck big time for a while.

🔹Manage your expectations.
The benefits of feeling more calm can be immediate. However, the more important long-term change requires time and practice.

🔹Find a meditation buddy.
Report to a friend or someone you trust. It’s too easy to skip a day if you don’t feel like it. Have someone else help you be accountable.

We believe a multi-disciplinary approach to fitness and health is the key to longevity. Whether it’s mindfulness and mindset, exercise, nutrition, or sleep and stress habits, it all matters.
